BRIAN ROYALTY GETS SECOND BEE
CREEK RECYCLING
LATE MODEL SERIES WIN AT CORBIN
SPEEDWAY
Brian Royalty of Cynthiana, Ky.
picked up his second feature victory of the 2010 season in the Bee
Creek Recycling Late Model Series.
The main event on the evening of
the resumption of racing at Corbin Speedway under a new management
team saw a total of twelve double-file restarts.
Royalty didn't get the lead for
good until taking it on the first restart with 11 laps complete, and
he went on to hold off Eric Centers of Corbin and Marty Taylor of
Keavy in a blanket finish.
He had set fast time of 13.510
seconds in qualifying, and the pre-race dice roll of 2 put him on
the outside of the front row beside Jason Jones of London.
The pair ran side-by-side for
four laps, with Royalty actually leading by a few feet on the second
and third trips around the quarter-mile paved oval, before Jones
pulled his Clayton Homes Chevrolet No. 8 in front, and Mike Bargo of
Corbin got under Royalty to take over second on the sixth lap.
Those two battled over the lead
for the next five laps, until Jones spun in the third turn after
some contact, which brought out the first caution and sent both
Jones and the Leah's Catering Chevrolet No. 22 driven by Bargo to
the tail for the restart.
That put Royalty and his A&J
Service Center Chevrolet No. 24 on the inside and Doug Callebs of
Hinkle on the outside in the Callebs Racing Ford No. 55 for the
restart.
The green flag was only out for
one lap before Brian Voiles of Knoxville spun the Sonny's Auto Parts
Chevrolet No. 3, and less than a lap after the next attempted
restart, Bargo spun after contact with Jones, which may have been a
move to even things up.
Royalty pulled away to a lead of
3.1 seconds after that, only to have it erased when Gregg Carby of
Lexington spun in the GC Electric Chevrolet No. 12 on the 17th lap.
Eric Centers of Corbin had moved
his Young's Auto Body Chevrolet No. 98 into second by that point,
and restarted alongside Royalty.
Carby spun again in the first
turn a lap after they got rolling again, and on the subsequent
restart Centers slipped high in the first turn and fell to fifth
spot as Jonathan Storms of Woodbine in the Storms Motorsports
Chevrolet No. 16, Bargo, and Callebs got past him.
On the 26th lap, Storms spun in
the second turn after some contact from Bargo, sending both of them
to the rear, and that put Callebs back on the outside of the front
row for the restart.
A string of caution periods
ensued after that one.
After one more completed lap,
Jones spun in the in the third turn and his car had to be pushed to
the pits.
The next restart saw Terry Smith
of Bimble spin his Southside Auto & Truck Sales Chevrolet No. 25 in
the second turn, with both Storms and Voiles becoming involved.
They got one more lap in before
something broke on Bargo's car, sending him skidding into the third
turn guardrail with sparks flying from under the car.
On the next try at a green flag,
Voiles spun on the backstretch and Callebs rolled into the infield
on the front straightaway, with his car having to be pushed back to
the pit area.
The next attempt was also
unsuccessful, as Centers spun in the fourth turn, after being tapped
by Jared Smith of Stanford, who had just suffered a flat right front
tire on his Danville Office Equipment Chevrolet No. 94.
They got all the way to 40 laps
before the next caution flag, when Carby spun in the second turn
after contact from Eugene Smith of Corbin in the Thunder Sam's
Fireworks Chevrolet No. 5.
For the next restart, there were
only seven cars remaining from the original fourteen, with Royalty
and Taylor, in the Aaron's Chevrolet No. 53, on the front row.
Centers and Storms made up the second, with Carby and Eugene Smith
in the third, followed by Jared Smith, who had rejoined the field
after getting a new tire.
Centers got under Taylor after
the restart and took over second, but Royalty pulled out to a four
car length lead before the final caution, a spin by Carby, set up a
green-white-checker finish.
Royalty managed to hold off the
last charge by Centers, who had Taylor on his rear bumper at the
finish.
Storms was fourth, with Eugene
Smith fifth and Jared Smith sixth.
The remainder of the finishing
order, based on laps completed, was made up of Carby, Voiles,
Callebs, Bargo, Terry Smith, Jones, Gary Arthur of Kenevo, W.Va. in
the Hydraulic Services & Supply Chevrolet No. 11, and Greg Sigler of
Russell, Ky. driving the Precision Orthopedics Chevrolet No. 99.
Bargo was the winner of the
trophy dash, and the heat races were won by Taylor and Terry Smith.
